When faced with a lot of choices, humans often get confused and are unable to make a decision. This causes frustration and leads to cognitive load.\n<\/p>\n<p>Our brain is often burdened with the responsibility of processing and remembering things, but too much information can sometimes lead to an overload. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andacademy.com\/resources\/blog\/ui-ux-design\/what-is-ux-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UX design<\/a>, cognitive load refers to the mental effort that users require to process information and make decisions about a product or a service.\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>Not to be confused with<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"not_confuse\">\n<div class=\"card-box\">\n<div class=\"glo-box hovercard\">\n<p><strong>Complexity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nIt refers to the intrinsic nature of a task or information.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Types of Cognitive Load<\/h2>\n<p>There are three types of cognitive load that all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andacademy.com\/resources\/blog\/ui-ux-design\/how-to-become-a-ux-designer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UX designers<\/a> should know about.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Intrinsic &#8211;<\/strong> This refers to the inherent difficulty of the task or information and how it is presented.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Extraneous &#8211;<\/strong> This refers to the various distractions that disrupt information processing. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Germane &#8211;<\/strong> This refers to the effort required to create new information and find ways to improve its processing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Ways to Reduce Cognitive Load in UX<\/h2>\n<p>Cognitive load can severely impact the user experience delivered by a product. Here are some ways to reduce it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Simplify the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andacademy.com\/resources\/blog\/ui-ux-design\/what-is-ui-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UI<\/a>  by removing unnecessary elements and minimizing distracting elements.<\/li>\n<li>Use common patterns and placements of elements that users are generally accustomed to.<\/li>\n<li>Present your information clearly and in smaller chunks for easier digestion and processing.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain consistency in design and avoid adding too many elements that surprise the user or break their concentration.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure a quick response time for the user to reduce their frustration and cognitive load when using your product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note: All information and\/or data from external sources is believed to be accurate as of the date of publication.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cognitive load refers to a human\u2019s ability to process information.
