Build Your First Interactive p5.js Sketch

In this activity, you will make a circle that follows your mouse and changes color when you click. The sketch shows the basic framework of a p5.js program, and how real-time input influences a graphic.

1. Set Up Your Digital Canvas

Open the p5.js Web Editor and create a new sketch. Begin by creating a variable called circleColor. On the first line, enter “let circleColor;” to give the program a place to store the circle’s current color.

Inside the setup function, enter “createCanvas(600, 400);” to create a drawing area that is 600 pixels wide and 400 pixels tall. On the following line, enter “circleColor = color(66, 135, 245);” to give the circle a blue starting color.

The setup function only runs once when the sketch begins. It establishes the canvas and any values the program needs before it starts drawing.

2. Draw the Circle

Move to the draw function. Enter “background(245);” on the first line inside the brackets. This command refreshes the canvas with a light gray background each time the program redraws the scene. Without it, the previous positions of the circle would remain visible and create a trail.

On the next line, enter “noStroke();” to remove the circle’s outline. Follow it with “fill(circleColor);” to apply the color stored in your variable.

Finally, enter “circle(mouseX, mouseY, 60);” to create a circle with a diameter of 60 pixels. The first two values determine its horizontal and vertical position.

3. Make the Circle Follow Your Mouse

The mouseX and mouseY values continually track the position of your pointer. Because you used them as the circle’s coordinates, the shape will move wherever you move your mouse.

Click the play button in the editor and move your pointer across the canvas. The circle should follow your movement immediately.

4. Change the Color With a Click

Below the draw function, create a new function by entering “function mousePressed() {“ on one line. Inside the function, enter “circleColor = color(random(255), random(255), random(255));” and close the function with a bracket on the next line.

The mousePressed function runs whenever you click. Each random command selects a value between zero and 255 for one color channel. Together, the three values produce a new color after every click.

5. Run the Completed Sketch

Running the completed sketch enables you to test both interactions. The circle should follow your pointer and change color when you click anywhere in the canvas.

You have now connected two types of input to visible responses. Mouse position controls movement, while clicking controls color. Try adjusting the circle’s diameter or changing the canvas background next. Small experiments will help you understand how each instruction affects the final experience.
