Leading

Leading refers to the amount of space between the lines. In graphic design, it is also known as the ‘line space’ - the distance between the baselines of two lines of text. It is an extremely important concept as it makes sure the text in a design is readable.

Leading ensures readability by ensuring enough space between two lines to make them legible. It is also a crucial aspect of UI design and ensures content is placed optimally to engage users properly.

Leading in Typography

Leading in typography plays a crucial role in improving the visual appeal of the text. It is mainly of three types-

  • Negative leading - It is when the leading is less than the font size.
  • Positive leading - It is when the leading is more than the font size.
  • Set solid - It is when no leading is applied.

Generally, graphic designers use different types of leading based on the scope of their projects. However, negative leading is generally considered the easiest to read.

Importance of Leading Space in Typography

Leading space is extremely important as it makes text more readable. There are, however, other reasons why it is an important aspect of typography.

  • Leading improves the content flow and makes readers' eyes go through the text smoothly.
  • It improves the visual appeal of the design by ensuring text is placed optimally.
  • It offers more flexibility to designers as they can adjust line length according to the needs of the design.
  • Leading also prevents eye strains in humans, ensuring a good experience.
