PPI

Pixels Per Inch (PPI) is a way to measure how sharp digital images look on screens. It shows how many pixels fit in one inch of screen space. The more pixels per inch, the clearer and sharper the image appears.

PPI is important for web design, mobile apps, and digital displays. Designers use PPI to make sure images look crisp on different devices like phones, tablets, and computer monitors. Higher PPI means better image quality on digital screens.

Dots Per Inch measures print output resolution by counting ink dots.

How to Calculate PPI

Calculating PPI helps designers understand screen quality and image sharpness. By knowing the PPI, you can determine how clear an image will look on different devices.

Here are the key steps to calculate PPI:

  • Find screen dimensions: Get the width and height of the screen in pixels.
  • Measure physical size: Determine the actual screen size in inches.
  • Use the formula: PPI = √(width² + height²) ÷ diagonal screen size in inches.
  • Check the result: Higher PPI numbers mean sharper, more detailed displays.
  • Apply to design: Use PPI knowledge to optimize images for specific screens.

Understanding PPI in Different Devices

Different digital devices have varying PPI requirements based on their size, viewing distance, and intended use. Knowing these differences helps designers create images that look sharp and professional across all platforms.

  • Mobile design: Smartphones often have 300-500+ PPI for sharp text and images.
  • Web design: Computer monitors typically range from 72-150 PPI.
  • Tablet design: Tablets usually have 150-300 PPI for balanced clarity.
  • High-resolution displays: Retina and 4K screens can exceed 300 PPI.
  • Digital artwork: Artists consider PPI when creating images for specific devices.
  • User interface: UI elements must work well at the target device's PPI.
  • Image optimization: Photos and graphics need proper sizing for different PPI screens
