Tracking

Tracking refers to the uniform space adjustment between all the characters of a block of text. It is also known as letter spacing and is used to uniformly increase or decrease the space between the characters. Tracking is an important concept for graphic designers as it impacts the overall quality and density of text in a design.

Visual spacing is essential to make a piece of design readable. Tracking is used to ensure that, in a selected piece, all the characters are spaced evenly to improve readability. It is important to consider font type and size while tracking to achieve optimal results.

Importance of Tracking in Typography Design

In typography, tracking is essential to adjust the space between characters, especially, when working with headings, sub-headings, and highlighted text. It focuses on the entire block of text and ensures the following:

  • Readability - Tracking is extremely important for overall readability and ensures that every word in a block of text is readable and understandable to the users.
  • Visual Appeal - Tracking helps improve the visual appeal of the text by maintaining the spacing between each character in a piece for a cleaner appearance.
  • User Experience - Tracking is an essential process that improves the user experience of a design. Proper spacing allows users to read and absorb more efficiently.
  • Fixing Design Issues- Tracking is useful in fixing design issues such as orphans and windows. Tracking ensures that the first line or last lines of paragraphs do not appear in different columns and align with the rest of the text. It also helps to ensure that text in all caps looks clean.
