Blank Space

Blank space in graphic design refers to the empty space between the design elements. It is essentially an area in a design that has been left empty intentionally or unintentionally by the designer.

Blank space is a broader term that also includes white space, which is an intentional empty area in a design. It serves no particular purpose on its own, but when left intentionally, it can help in creating visual balance and guide users’ eyes towards the focal point of the design.

Difference Between Blank Space and White Space

The difference between blank space and white space is not very stark. Blank space is a broader term that includes white space as a sub-category. Blank space can be any unused space in the design, whereas white space is the space that is left blank or unused intentionally to enhance the quality of the design.

White space has a functional and aesthetic value. It is an intentional lack of content to create a visual breathing space. Blank space, on the other hand, is simply due to the lack of content and may or may not be intentional. In general, white space can be considered blank space. However, not all blank spaces are white spaces.
