Luminance

Luminance is a measure of the intensity of light emitted or reflected from a surface. It describes the perceived brightness of a color, independent of its hue or saturation. In graphic design, luminance is crucial for establishing contrast.

Since the human eye is more sensitive to lightness than color, managing luminance ensures that elements remain distinct and readable, even if the design is converted to black and white. It helps create designs that are accessible and visually balanced.

Not to be confused with

Brightness

It refers to the relative lightness or darkness of a color.

How to Use Luminance in Graphic Design

Here is how to use luminance in graphic design.

  • Maximize Readability - Ensure high luminance difference between text and background.
  • Create Depth - Use lighter values for highlights and darker values for shadows.
  • Avoid Vibration - Differing luminance prevents colors from clashing visually.
  • Test in Grayscale - Convert artwork to black and white to ensure the contrast works even without color.

Difference Between Luminance and Brightness

Although they seem similar, luminance and brightness are technically quite different from each other. Luminance measures light intensity while accounting for human vision sensitivity. On the other hand, brightness is a subjective scale from dark to light, regardless of the color’s wavelength. While brightness changes the color value, it is luminance that changes how clearly the eye perceives that value against others.
