Symbol

A symbol in graphic design is a visual representation of a concept, idea, or message. It can be a shape, image, or object. It is often used to facilitate concise messages effectively while transcending the barriers of language.

Symbols tend to be abstract and can be interpreted in multiple ways. The symbol in itself may not represent any particular message directly; rather, it hints towards it. Symbols can also be cultural and can have multiple meanings in different settings. For example, a thumbs-up can be perceived positively or negatively based on where you are located in the world.

Not to be confused with

Icon

It is the visual representation of a message or idea that is simple and recognizable.

Use of Symbols in Graphic Design

Symbols in graphic design play a major role in representing ideas and can be used in the following ways.

  • Symbols are often used to convey complex ideas to the public.
  • It is a concise way of representing abstract concepts.
  • They transcend language barriers and can help reach a wider audience.
  • Adding a symbol to your design can make it more memorable.
  • Symbols can also be used to represent a brand’s identity and improve its recall value.

Difference Between Symbols and Icons

The major difference between symbols and icons is that an icon is comparatively simpler and can often be easily interpreted. On the other hand, symbols are more abstract and may need a cultural understanding for proper interpretation.

An icon is also used to represent a real thing, whereas a symbol can be used to represent ideas or messages as well. For example, an icon for a shopping cart represents a real-life object that is the shopping cart; whereas the symbol of ‘Heart’ represents more complex subjects, such as love or like.
