Trellis

A trellis is an open frame made from wood, metal, or other materials built in an intersecting pattern. In gardens, it’s used to support plants that climb, like vines and roses.

Today, people also use trellises inside buildings as decorations. They can act as room dividers, covers for walls, or added design details to furniture. The repeating shapes of a trellis give a room more depth and makes it look stylish and interesting.

Not to be confused with

Lattice

A lattice is a special kind of trellis where the pieces cross each other in diagonal lines.

Types of Trellis

Trellises can be made in lots of different patterns. Here are five common styles:

  • Classic Diamond: The sticks cross to make diamond shapes. It’s a timeless look that fits in almost any room.
  • Moroccan: Curvy, fancy shapes inspired by Islamic architecture. It gives a space an exotic, “far‑away” feel.
  • Quatrefoil: Four‑leaf clover shapes. It reminds people of old Gothic or Renaissance buildings.
  • Chinese Chippendale: Straight lines that form geometric patterns, inspired by Chinese design. It’s often used in more traditional rooms.
  • Contemporary Geometric: Simple, bold shapes for a modern look.

Application of Trellis in Interior Design

Trellises aren’t just for gardens; they can be used in multiple ways to add visual interest. You can add them indoors in the following ways:

  • Wall Decoration: Use trellis panels or wallpaper to add texture and pattern.
  • Room Dividers: Freestanding trellis screens can split a big room into smaller areas without blocking light.
  • Furniture Details: Use trellis patterns on cabinet doors, headboards, or chair backs to make them stand out.
  • Ceiling Accents: Attach trellis pieces overhead to draw your eyes up and make the ceiling more interesting.
  • Window Panels: Hang trellis panels by windows instead of blinds for a pretty, filtered light effect.
